Colin Powell

Early Years

Colin Powell was born in Harlem, New York City in 1937. He was raised in the south Bronx by Jamaican immigrants and grew up in a devoutly religious family. His parents instilled in him a strong work ethic and a commitment to service. He attended Morris High School in the Bronx, graduating with honors in 1954.

Powell is married to Alma Vivian Johnson and has three children. He is a lifelong learner and has a passion for reading, especially history and philosophy. He has a great love for music, particularly jazz and blues, and enjoys playing the trumpet.

Career

Powell enlisted in the United States Army in 1958, and went on to become an officer. He served as a military advisor in Vietnam, and later went on to serve as the National Security Advisor and Secretary of State. He retired from the military in 1993 after 35 years of service.

Secretary of State

Colin Powell served as the 65th United States Secretary of State from 2001 to 2005, and was the first African American to hold the position. During his time as Secretary of State, he worked to strengthen the US' relationships with other nations and is credited with helping to reduce the world's nuclear weapons. He also worked to promote democracy in suffering countries, and to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1993 for his exemplary service and commitment to democracy.

Joint Chiefs of Staff

Colin Powell was the first African American to serve as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, from 1989 to 1993. During his tenure, Powell led the largest reorganization of the U.S. military since the end of World War II. He also advocated for peacekeeping missions in Somalia, Haiti, and Bosnia, and his efforts helped bring an end to the conflict in Yugoslavia. He was an advocate for human rights and was critical of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

4-Star General

Colin Powell enlisted in the United States Army in 1958, and went on to become an officer and eventually a four-star General.
